Thierry (Jacques-Nicolas-)Augustin
Born: May 10, 1795 Blois
Died May 22, 1856. A French historian from Paris. After graduating from the Ecole Normale Supérieure (Higher Normal School), he became Saint-Simon's secretary. He later became a liberal journalist. After reading A. Chateaubriand's The Martyrs, he realized his calling as a historian, and although he became blind in 1826, he devoted himself to historical research. He emphasized the importance of the perspective of ethnic conflict in history, and wrote Histoire de la conquête de l'Angleterre par les Normands (1825) and Récits des temps mérovingiens (40). His other works include Essai sur le Tiers État (53), Reflections on the Third Estate.
