The capital of the prefecture of the same name in central Peru. Population 161,406 (1993). Founded in 1563, it is located in the middle reaches of the Ica River, which flows into the Pacific Ocean. The surrounding area is arid, with a vast desert to the west. A tunnel is dug through the Western Andes mountain range to channel the water from Lake Orococha and Lake Choclacocha in Huancavelica Prefecture into the Ica River, making it Peru's largest cotton-growing area, covering an area of 300 hectares. The city is the center of this agricultural region and a distribution center for cotton and other agricultural products. The outer port of Pisco is 93 km northwest.
