Ketchikan - Ketchikan (English spelling)

Japanese: ケチカン - けちかん(英語表記)Ketchikan
Ketchikan - Ketchikan (English spelling)

A fishing town on the southwest coast of Rebilazigiddo Island, Alexander Archipelago, southeastern Alaska, United States. Population 7,922 (2000). It has one of Alaska's largest ice-free ports and is an important trading and port of call. It is also known as a salmon fishing center, with a large salmon canning and processing plant and Alaska's first pulp and lumber industry still thriving. The town was founded during the Alaska Gold Rush in the 1890s and developed as a supply point for gold miners. It also prospered as Alaska's first port of call for ships from the mainland. It is also blessed with tourism resources, with deer, bears, and wolves living in the forests, and many great fishing spots. Many totem poles left by the indigenous Tlingit people remain in the city, and they are collected at the Totem Heritage Center and the Tongass Historical Society Museum, and can also be seen in parks.
