The former city area of Kirishima City, in the south-central part of northeastern Kagoshima Prefecture. It is located at the innermost part of Kagoshima Bay. In 1954, Kokubun-cho, Higashiosayama-mura, Higashikokubun-mura, Shikine-mura, and almost all of Shimizu-mura were merged, and in 1955, the city was incorporated. In 2005, it was merged with the six towns of Mizobe-cho, Yokokawa-cho, Makizono-cho, Kirishima-cho, Hayato-cho, and Fukuyama-cho to form Kirishima City. In the middle of the Nara period, the Kokubunji temple of Osumi Province was built in Kokubun, the central city area, and later the provincial capital was also established. In 1604, Shimazu Yoshihisa built a castle. The Kyoto-style townscape from that time still remains. In the Edo period, it was one of the foothill settlements of the Satsuma Domain. In addition to traditional industries such as lumber, woodworking, and shochu, there are factories for spinning, sewing, building materials, etc. The plateau is used for farming, and the alluvial land of the complex delta of the Amorigawa and Kengyogawa rivers is used for rice paddies. The main industry is agriculture, and in addition to rice, the area is famous for its long-standing tobacco cultivation. It is said that Kokubun tobacco was first cultivated in the early 17th century after seeds were imported from Siam (Thailand), and it is known that it supported the finances of the Satsuma domain along with sugar from Amami. Seedling raising for tomatoes, cucumbers, eggplants, and other crops, as well as horticulture, are popular, as are the raising of beef cattle and pigs. The ruins of Osumi Kokubunji Temple, a nationally designated historic site, are located here.KokubuSource: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
