Tetzel - Johann Tetzel

Dominican monk. In 1504, he became a preacher for the sale of indulgences. He became famous only because in 1517, Archbishop Albrecht entrusted him with the sale of indulgences in the Magdeburg Archbishopric. He sold indulgences just across the border of the Electorate of Saxony, attracting the people of Saxony, because the sale of indulgences was prohibited in the Electorate of Saxony. Luther felt a religious crisis when he saw that his parishioners did not perform acts of repentance and could easily obtain the salvation of their souls with money, and so he published the "95 Theses." This marked the beginning of the German Reformation, but Tetzel died in 1519 during the Leipzig Debate.

ドミニコ会士。1504年より贖宥(しょくゆう)状（免罪符）販売の説教者となる。彼が有名となるのは、ひとえに17年に大司教アルプレヒトにマグデブルク大司教領内での贖宥状販売を委託されたことによる。彼は、ザクセン選帝侯の領地境のすぐ向こう側で贖宥状販売を行い、ザクセンの領民たちをひきつけた。ザクセン選帝侯領内では贖宥状販売が禁止されていたからである。ルターは、自分の教区民が悔い改めの行為をせず、金銭によって安易に魂の救いが得られるとしたことに宗教的危機を感じて「九十五か条の論題」を発表した。これがドイツ宗教改革の発端となるが、テッツェルは19年ライプツィヒ討論会の開催中に死去した。
