Japanese: トゲアワフキ(棘泡吹) - トゲアワフキ

A general term for insects belonging to the Hemiptera family Machaerotidae. A group closely related to the family Scyphotidae. Machaerotidae larvae form calcareous tube nests with substances secreted by themselves and develop there, which is unique in the insect kingdom. Morphologically similar to Scyphotidae, they have more developed scutella than Scyphotidae, and some species have large thorn-like protrusions that protrude backwards. Many species are found in the tropics and subtropics of the Old World. Two species, Hindoloides bipunctata and Machaerota takeuchii (illustration), live in Japan, but both are found south of the Tohoku region and have not been recorded in Hokkaido.

半翅目トゲアワフキ科Machaerotidaeに属する昆虫の総称。アワフキムシ科に近縁の一群。トゲアワフキ類の幼虫が，みずから分泌した物質により石灰質の筒巣を形成し，その中で発育するのは，昆虫界でも特異な例である。形態的にもアワフキムシ類によく似るが，アワフキムシ類よりも小楯板が発達し，なかには大きなとげ状となり，後方に突出する種もある。旧世界の熱帯，亜熱帯に種類が多い。日本にはムネアカアワフキHindoloides bipunctataとタケウチトゲアワフキMachaerota takeuchii（イラスト）の2種が生息するが，ともに東北地方以南に分布し，北海道には記録がない。
