Japanese: ゴイアス[州](英語表記)Goiás
Goiás (state) (English spelling)
A landlocked state in the midwest of Brazil. Area: 341,289 km2, population: 4,308,400 (1995), population density: 12.6/km2. State capital: Goiânia. Most of the state is the Brazilian highlands, consisting of numerous chapadas (table lands) at an altitude of about 1,000 m. Except for the lowland tropical rainforests created by the two major tributaries of the Amazon River, the Tocantins and Araguaia rivers, which flow north, the state is a semi-arid sparse forest called the Cerrado. The average annual temperature is between 19 and 26°C, the annual precipitation is around 1,300 mm, and there is a clear dry season from May to October, during which the sclerophyll of the Cerrado's twisted shrubs lose their leaves.
