A pass located in the east of Mt. Kasumizawa in the Northern Alps in western Nagano Prefecture. It is 2,135 meters above sea level. Until a road along the Azusa River was built in 1933 (Showa 8), this was a mountain trail leading to Kamikochi from Matsumoto. Since early modern times, it was a route for loggers and travelers to Hida (Gifu Prefecture), and since the 1870s, when modern mountaineering in the Northern Alps began, it has been popular with climbers. Weston, who introduced the name of the Japanese Alps to the world, is said to have shed tears of emotion at the evening view of the Hotaka mountain range from the pass in 1891 (Meiji 24). There is a Tokumoto Pass hut at the pass, and it takes about seven hours to reach the pass from Matsumoto Electric Railway Shinshimashima Station by going up the Shimashimayazawa River, or about two hours from Myojin Pond on the Kamikochi side.
