Chemical formula: PCl 5. It is obtained by directly reacting phosphorus trichloride (PCl 3) with chlorine. It has a pale yellow tetragonal crystal structure. Its melting point is 167°C (919 mmHg), its sublimation temperature is 160°C, and its specific gravity is 2.119 (20°C). It is soluble in carbon disulfide, carbon tetrachloride, and benzoyl chloride. In the crystalline state, it has an ionic structure with tetrahedral [PCl 4 ] + and octahedral [PCl 6 ] - . In the gaseous state, it is a trigonal bipyramidal molecule. In carbon tetrachloride, it exists as a dimer sharing the edges of two octahedra. When it becomes a gas, it dissociates into phosphorus trichloride and chlorine by a few percent at 100°C, and completely at 300°C or higher.
