〘Noun〙① Rent for public fields during the Nara and Heian periods. Public fields remaining after the allocation of kubunden were called joden , which were cultivated by peasants, with the state taking a portion of the harvest. This was called jito. If the state was considered the landlord, it would be equivalent to tenant farming fees. In the early Heian period, during the Engi era ( 901-923 ), the rate of jito was roughly one-fifth of the harvest.
