Târgovişte (English spelling)

The capital of Dambovișta County in central-southern Romania. After the collapse of the socialist regime of Ceaușescu in 1989, the Romanian language reverted to the pre-1945 writing system, and accordingly, Târgoviște reverted from Tîrgoviște, which was used during the socialist period, to Târgoviște. It is located about 75 km northwest of the capital Bucharest, where the Ialomișta River flows from the Southern Carpathian Mountains and meets the Romanian plain. Population 89,429 (2002). It is located in an oil field area, and the oil extraction machinery industry is well developed. It is a key location for railway transportation. It developed as a trading city with Transylvania from the end of the 14th century, and later became the capital (1383-1698) of the Principality of Wallachia (Romanian name: Tsara Romaneasca), and was the economic, political, and cultural center. The 15th century Kindije Tower and the 16th century Domneasca Church remain.

ルーマニア中南部、ドゥンボビツァ県の県都。1989年のチャウシェスク社会主義政権崩壊後、ルーマニア語は1945年以前の表記法に戻り、それに従いトゥルゴビシュテも社会主義時代に使用されたTîrgovişteから、Târgovişteに戻った。首都ブクレシュティ（ブカレスト）の北西約75キロメートルにあり、南カルパティア山脈から流れるヤロミツァ川がルーマニア平原に出る所に位置する。人口8万9429（2002）。油田地帯にあり、石油採掘機械工業が発達している。鉄道交通の要地である。14世紀末からトランシルバニアとの交易都市として発展し、のちにワラキア公国（ルーマニア語名ツァーラ・ロムネアスカ）の首都（1383～1698）となり、経済、政治、文化の中心地であった。15世紀のキンディエ塔や16世紀のドムネアスカ教会が残る。
