The night of New Year's Eve. Also known as Toshitori or Toshikoshi. At shrines, the Oharae ritual is held, and at temples, 108 bells are rung to pray for liberation from worldly desires. The custom of spending the night in seclusion at a shrine, known as Toshigomori, remains in the custom of visiting shrines in the early hours of New Year's Day. There are also customs in various places of making a new, pure fire on this night to use as the fire for the new year, such as the Okeramairi pilgrimage to Yasaka Shrine in Kyoto. →Related topicsNew Year's Eve Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
