New Year's Eve - Joya

Japanese: 除夜 - じょや

The night of New Year's Eve. Also known as Toshitori or Toshikoshi. At shrines, the Oharae ritual is held, and at temples, 108 bells are rung to pray for liberation from worldly desires. The custom of spending the night in seclusion at a shrine, known as Toshigomori, remains in the custom of visiting shrines in the early hours of New Year's Day. There are also customs in various places of making a new, pure fire on this night to use as the fire for the new year, such as the Okeramairi pilgrimage to Yasaka Shrine in Kyoto.

大晦日(おおみそか)の夜。年取り，年越しとも。神社では大祓(おおはらえ)の神事が行われ，寺院では108の除夜の鐘を鳴らして煩悩解脱(ぼんのうげだつ)を祈る。年籠(としごもり)と称して神社に籠りこの夜を過ごした習慣は，元日未明に神社にお参りする習俗の中に残っている。またこの夜新たに清い火をつくり，新年の火とする習わしも各地にあり，京都八坂神社のおけら参りもその例。
