A device that measures the power generated by prime movers such as steam engines, internal combustion engines, and water wheels, and the power consumed by work machines such as compressors and pumps. They are broadly divided into two types based on the measurement principle: (1) Absorption dynamometers: These determine power by directly measuring the rotational moment at the time of braking and converting the power of the prime mover into heat or electricity. Examples of these dynamometers include solid friction dynamometers (e.g., Broni dynamometer), hydraulic dynamometers (e.g., Junkers hydraulic dynamometer), air dynamometers (e.g., Renard air dynamometer), electric dynamometers, and gear pump dynamometers. (2) Transmission dynamometers: These determine power by indirectly measuring the rotational moment while the power is being transmitted, and can measure the rotational moment during use. Examples of these dynamometers include torsional dynamometers (e.g., Amsler torsional dynamometer), gear dynamometers, and belt dynamometers.
