A small island in the North Sea in the northern German state of Schleswig-Holstein. It is a tourist destination, with a fishing industry, a marine biology research center, and a bird watching station. It became a Danish territory in 1714, a British territory in 1807, and a German territory in 1890, when it was fortified.
