Shinoda Forest

Japanese: 信太森 - しのだのもり

Utamakura. Located in Izumi City, Osaka Prefecture. In the old Shinta district of Izumi County, Izumi Province, Shintamori is a forest centered around the "Thousand-branched camphor tree" which is described in the Kokin Rokujo as "Parted by the thousand branches of the camphor tree in Shinta Forest, Izumi, I think of things." Shintamori Shrine is located beneath the tree. As a utamakura, it was written together with camphor trees, but a work in which it was changed to kuzu appears in the Shin Kokinshu. The legend that a white fox living in this forest transformed into a beautiful woman named Kuzunoha, married Abe no Yasuna, and gave birth to the onmyoji Abe no Seimei spread to the public along with Joruri, making this forest famous.

歌枕。大阪府和泉市にある。昔の和泉国和泉郡信太郷の地で，《古今六帖》に〈和泉なる信太の森の楠（くす）の木の千枝（ちえ）に別れて物をこそ思へ〉と詠まれる〈千枝の楠〉を中心にした森が信太森である。樹下に信太森神社がある。歌枕としては楠とともに詠ぜられたが，葛（くず）に転じた作が《新古今集》にみえる。この森に住む白狐が葛の葉なる美女に姿を変えて安倍保名と結婚し，陰陽師安倍晴明を生んだという伝説が浄瑠璃とともに世間に広がり，この森を著名にした。
