Kazaguruma - Pinwheel

A vine plant of the Ranunculaceae family (APG classification: Ranunculaceae) with brown stems that become woody. A species of the Clematis genus. The leaves are pinnately compound with 3-5 leaflets. One to three pairs of leaves grow on each current-year branch, and one flower appears at the top in May or June. There are no petals, and eight white calyxes form a petal-like shape, pale purple, pale blue, or white. There are many stamens, slender purple anthers, and white flat filaments. The achene is broadly ovate, and the persistent style has long yellowish-brown hairs. It is used as a parent for crossing to create horticultural species. It grows in slightly humid places, and is found in Honshu, Shikoku, and northern Kyushu west of the Chubu region, as well as in Korea and northeastern China.

The closely related Tessen ( C. florida Thunb.) is native to central China and is believed to have been introduced to Japan during the Kanbun era (1661-1673). It is named for its slender, tough stems. It is deciduous, but the vines remain in winter. It has six white, petal-like calyxes. It has numerous, deformed stamens and enlarged, flattened, dark purple filaments. It does not bear fruit easily.

キンポウゲ科（APG分類：キンポウゲ科）のつる植物で、褐色の茎は木化する。クレマチス属の1種。葉は羽状複葉で小葉は3～5枚。当年枝に1～3対の葉をつけ、5～6月に1花を頂生する。花弁はなく白色の萼(がく)8枚が花弁状となり、色は淡紫ないし淡青もしくは白。雄しべは多数で葯(やく)は細長く紫色、花糸は白色で扁平(へんぺい)。痩果(そうか)は広卵形で、宿存する花柱には黄褐色の長毛がある。園芸種作出の交雑親として利用される。やや湿り気の多い所に生え、中部地方以西の本州、四国、九州北部に生育し、朝鮮、中国東北部に分布する。

　近縁のテッセン（鉄線）C. florida Thunb.は中国中部の原産で、日本へは寛文(かんぶん)年間（1661～1673）に渡来したとされている。名は茎が細長く質が硬いことによる。落葉するが冬期もつるが残る。萼は6枚で白色の花弁状となる。雄しべは多数で変形しており、花糸は扁平に拡大していて暗紫色である。結実しにくい。
