An insect of the Nymphalidae family of the Lepidoptera order. A specialty of East Asia. Found throughout Japan, it is somewhat mountainous. Small, with a wingspan of 4-4.5cm, females are slightly larger than males, and have rounded wings. They emerge twice a year, three times in warmer regions. Unusually for Nymphalidae, they overwinter as pupae. The spring type has developed reddish-brown parts on the wings, giving it a similar impression to the leopard butterflies and false fritillaries, but the summer type has a thick white band running across a black-brown background, giving it a different appearance similar to the common fritillary. The Japanese name comes from the fact that the white band on the summer type looks like the reverse of the kanji character for eight. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
