Asakusa Betsuin

Japanese: 浅草別院 - あさくさべついん

A temple in Nishi-Asakusa, Taito-ku, Tokyo. It is of the Shinshu sect (originally the Otani school). During the time of Kyonyo, the 12th abbot of Higashi Honganji, Kozui-ji was built in Kanda, Edo, and the next abbot, Sennyo, renamed it a branch temple of Higashi Honganji. In 1657 (Meireki 3), it was burned down in a major fire and moved to its current location. It has since been burned down several times, and was destroyed in an air raid during World War II, before being rebuilt in 1960. It has a main hall, a study and rotation hall, a memorial hall, a kindergarten, a beauty school, and more. In 1965, it was renamed Tokyo Honganji. [Kashiwabara Yusen]

東京都台東区西浅草にある寺。真宗(もと大谷派)。東本願寺12世教如のころ江戸神田に光瑞寺を建立，次の宣如が東本願寺末刹と改称，1657年(明暦3)大火に類焼し現地に移り，その後再三焼け，第2次大戦中空襲で焼失後，1960年復興。本堂，書院兼輪番所，記念会館，幼稚園，美容学校等をもつ。65年東京本願寺と改称した。【柏原祐泉】
