One of the twelve disciples of Jesus in the early Christian period in the mid-first century (Mark 3:18). According to John 1:35-51 and 12:21, he was a Jew from Bethsaida in Galilee, like Peter and Andrew, and was probably originally a disciple of John the Baptist. He followed Jesus as a missionary (John 6:5, 12:20-22), but the details are unknown. According to Eusebius, a church historian from the early fourth century, he died in Hierapolis in Asia Minor, but there is no certainty.PhilipSource: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
