Finnish linguist. Professor of Finnish language and literature at the University of Helsinki (1893-1929), he also served as Minister of Education and Minister of Foreign Affairs. His phonetic and morphological theory and syntax in his Grammar of the Finnish Language (1890) remain of great value. In his General History of Finnish Phonetics (1890-91), he historically explained the phonetic changes in the Baltic-Finnic languages and traced the origin and extent of consonant alternation in the Finno-Ugric languages. He also established a phylogenetic relationship between the Finno-Ugric languages and the Samoyedic languages.

フィンランドの言語学者。ヘルシンキ大学フィンランド語･文学教授(1893‐1929)で，文部大臣や外務大臣もつとめた。彼の《フィンランド語文法》の音声･形態論(1890)と統語論はいまもその価値を失っていない。《一般フィンランド音声史》(1890‐91)で，バルト･フィン諸語の音声変化を歴史的に解明し，子音階程交替の起源と範囲をフィン･ウゴル語派系の諸語の中に求めた。またフィン･ウゴル語派とサモエード諸語との間の系統的関係を確立した。
