A mathematician born in the Netherlands. After earning his doctorate from the University of Amsterdam in 1926, he continued his research in Göttingen for a while, and soon afterwards obtained a teaching position at the University of Groningen in the northeast of the Netherlands. He then moved to the University of Leipzig in Germany, the University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands, and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich. He is the author of many books and papers, but he is particularly famous for his two-volume Moderne Algebra, published in 1931, which had a major impact on algebra education.

オランダ生れの数学者。1926年にアムステルダム大学で学位を取得した後,しばらくゲッティンゲンで研究を続けて,まもなくオランダ北東部のフローニンゲン大学で教職を得た。その後ドイツのライプチヒ大学,オランダのアムステルダム大学,スイスのチューリヒ工科大学と職場をかえた。著書,論文が多数あるが,とくに有名なのは31年に出版された《現代代数学Moderne Algebra》2巻で,代数学の教育上大きい影響を与えた。
