1903‐1996 A mathematician born in the Netherlands. After earning his doctorate from the University of Amsterdam in 1926, he continued his research in Göttingen for a while, and soon afterwards obtained a teaching position at the University of Groningen in the northeast of the Netherlands. He then moved to the University of Leipzig in Germany, the University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands, and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich. He is the author of many books and papers, but he is particularly famous for his two-volume Moderne Algebra, published in 1931, which had a major impact on algebra education.
