A marine fish belonging to the family Scyphotidae in the order Alfonsinophyllum of the class Osteichthyes. It is also called Kanokouo. It is found along the Pacific coast south of Sagami Bay, the Ogasawara Islands, the Goto Islands, Jeju Island (Korea), the South China Sea, and the Hawaiian Islands. Its body length is 25 cm. Its body is laterally compressed and shaped like a sea bream, and is covered with hard, rough scales. It belongs to the subfamily Scyphotinae and is distinguished from the subfamily Acanthinae by the presence of one strong, long spine at the bottom of the preopercular bone and by the fact that its anal fin has less than 10 soft rays. It is different from other species in that it has the most spines on its head. Its body is a beautiful red color, with white dots on each scale, and 9 to 10 longitudinal stripes on its side. The pattern resembles a Kanoko dyed pattern, which is where the nickname comes from. It inhabits coastal reefs and coral reefs. It is nocturnal, hiding in the shade or in rocky holes during the day and coming out at night to feed. It does not form large schools, and is caught with masu nets set up between reefs. It is often kept in aquariums as an ornamental fish, but it is also edible and quite tasty. [Tsuru Okamura and Kunio Amioka November 17, 2015] They live on coastal reefs, hiding in the shade or in rocky caves during the day and coming out at night to feed. The vertical stripes created by their scales with white spots stand out. © Underwater Fort Enterprise, Isamu Soyama "> Squirrelfish (ecology) Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
