Born: November 4, 1909. Saletin Baba Died: February 17, 1967. Peruvian writer. In 1930, he joined the Peruvian radical political party APRA and protested against social injustice, for which he was imprisoned twice. In 1934, he was expelled and went into exile in Chile, then the United States. In terms of his creative endeavors, he was a "supporter of indigenous culture," and, based on the reality of Peru, an Andean country with an overwhelmingly large indigenous population, he believed that indigenous people, who are not part of indigenous culture, should truly represent Peru and Peruvian culture, and he sought ways to make this a reality. His representative works include La serpiente de oro (1935), Los perros hambrientos (The Hungry Dogs) (38), and El mundo es ancho y ajeno (The Wide, Unrelated World) (41).
