Hector Guimard

A representative French Art Nouveau architect. Born in Lyon. Studied at the Ecole des Arts Décoratifs and the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. He began his design career in the late 1880s, and distinguished himself with the Sacred Heart in Paris (1895), which was significantly influenced by Viollet-le-Duc. In 1895, he travelled to England and Belgium, and was particularly impressed by the work of Horta, returning to Paris where he made a clear move towards Art Nouveau design with his design for Castel Bélanger (1899). He created organic and original architectural spaces using steel frames in such buildings as the Paris Metro Stations (1900) and the Halle des Musées d'Ambres de Romanes (1901). He also produced many excellent residential works. He moved to America in 1938, and died in New York.
