Selection of Tang Poetry - Toushisen

Japanese:
Selection of Tang Poetry - Toushisen

A collection of Tang poetry compiled in the Ming Dynasty in China. Seven volumes in total. In Japan, it has been the most widely circulated anthology of Tang poetry since the Edo period. It is said to have been compiled by Li Panlong, and its authenticity has been debated since ancient times, but no consensus has been reached. Most of the poems in "Selected Tang Poems" are poems from the Tang section of "Anthology of Ancient and Modern Poems" by the same Li Panlong, and both "Anthology of Ancient and Modern Poems" and "Selected Tang Poems" are included in Gao Xi's "Pin'i of Tang Poems." Based on the relationship between these three, the prevailing view is that "Selected Tang Poems" was created based on a selection of Tang poetry by Li Panlong that was similar to the original selection.

The collection contains 465 poems. Each volume is divided into different poetic styles. As Li Panlong of the Kobunji school asserted, "Professions are from the Qin and Han dynasties, poetry is from the Prosperous Tang dynasty," the selection of poems is biased toward the Prosperous Tang dynasty, with 51 poems by Du Fu and 33 by Li Bai, making up about two-thirds of the total. In contrast, not a single poem is included by Bai Juyi, Li He, or Du Mu, who were from the middle and late Tang dynasties.

The oldest surviving edition is titled "Edited by Li Panlong, Annotated by Tang Ruxun, Directly Explained by Jiang Yi-kui," and Jiang Yi-kui's postscript states that it was published in 1593, so it is believed to have been published shortly after Li Panlong's death. The exact date of its introduction to Japan is unknown, but it is recorded as early as 1630 (Kan'ei 7) (Nawa Kassho's "Memorandum"). It became extremely popular after being advocated by Ogyu Sorai and Hattori Nankaku.
