Bronze drum - Douko

Japanese:
Bronze drum - Douko

A single-sided bronze drum found in southern China and Southeast Asia. It first appeared in the 4th century BC, and newer types are still used by mountain tribes today, so it has a lifespan of about 2,500 years. As a result, there is a wide variety in the shapes and patterns cast onto the surface, and various attempts have been made to classify them into types, but the most well-known classification is into four types by F. Heger of Austria.

In recent years, a large number of bronze drums believed to be older than Type I of Heger's classification have been discovered, mainly in Yunnan Province, China, and based on their shape and traces of having been exposed to fire, the prevailing theory is that bronze drums originated from bronze vessels that were turned upside down and repurposed. Bronze drums played an important role in religious ceremonies as musical instruments with special spiritual powers, and were also symbols of wealth.
