Atagoyama attracts worshippers from a wide area as a mountain that enshrines the god of fire prevention. According to the Atagoyama Engi, En no Gyoja and Unpen Shonin (Taichou) were the founders, Keishun was the founder of the restoration, and Wake no Kiyomaro imitated the Tang Dynasty's Mount Godai by building temples on the five peaks of Asahi, Owashi, Takami, Ryujo, and Kamazura, and named it Atago Godaiyama. The history of the five temples is unclear, but Hakuunji Temple on Asahi Peak enshrines the local Buddha Shogun Jizo, and together with Shogunzuka in Higashiyama, Kyoto, the mountain has been worshipped as the mountain that enshrines the god of the barrier (Shogun is thought to be a variation of the god of the barrier) that protects the capital.

　愛宕山は火防の神を祭る山として広範な地域から信仰を集めている。《愛宕山縁起》によると，役行者（えんのぎようじや），雲遍上人(泰澄)を開祖，慶俊を中興の祖とし，和気清麻呂が唐の五台山を模して朝日，大鷲，高見，竜上，賀魔蔵の五峰に寺を建て愛宕五台山としたという。五ヵ寺の歴史は明らかではないが，朝日峰の白雲寺が本地仏勝軍(将軍)地蔵を祭り，京都東山の将軍塚とともに京を守護する塞（さえ）の神(勝軍は塞の神の変化と考えられている)を祭る山として信仰されてきた。…
