Contour cultivation - Contour cultivation

A method of growing crops on sloping land. It is the basic cultivation method for strip cultivation, in which fields are created in strips along contour lines, and terrace cultivation. On sloping land, it is most important to prevent the soil from being washed down by rainwater, but when crops are grown on ridges cut along contour lines, the ridged crops prevent rainwater from running off vertically from the surface, and the rainwater is stored within the ridges and seeps into the ground. This prevents soil runoff and improves soil conservation, while also maintaining soil moisture in each ridge, improving crop growth. As the ridges themselves are made horizontally, work is easy and another advantage is that animal and mechanical power can be introduced.

傾斜地における作物の栽培法の一つ。等高線に沿って帯状に畑をつくる帯状栽培やテラス栽培の基本となる耕作法である。傾斜地では雨水によって土壌が下へ流されるのを防ぐことがもっとも重要であるが、等高線に沿ってうねを切って作物を栽培すると、雨水はうね状の作物によって縦に表面流去するのを妨げられ、うね内に貯留され、地中に浸透する。これにより土壌の流亡は防がれ、土壌保全の効果があがるとともに、各うねの土壌水分も保たれるので作物の生育をよくする。うね自体は水平につくられるので、作業は容易で、畜力や機械力を導入することができるのも利点である。
