A former town in the Naka district in northern Wakayama Prefecture. Located in the Kishi River basin, a tributary of the Kino River, it is a purely agricultural town, mainly engaged in rice and field farming. There is the Yamada Dam for irrigation. The Wakayama Electric Railway runs through the town, and it is a commuter town for Wakayama City. In November 2005, it merged with the towns of Uchida, Konagawa, Naka, and Momoyama in the Naka district to become Kinokawa City. 22.49 km2 . Population: 21,847 (2003). 和歌山県北部,那賀(なが)郡の旧町。紀ノ川の支流貴志川流域を占め,米作,畑作を主とする純農業町。灌漑(かんがい)用の山田ダムがある。和歌山電鉄が通じ,和歌山市のベッドタウンになっている。2005年11月,那賀郡打田町,粉河町,那賀町,桃山町と合併し市制,紀の川市となる。22.49km2。2万1847人(2003)。
