It is the capital of the Isère department in southeastern France. It was formerly the capital of the former province of Dauphine. Population 153,317 (1999), 160,649 (2015 census). Located 109 km southeast of Lyon, on both banks of the Isère River at the foot of the Great Chartreuse mountain range in the Dauphine Pre-Alps, it is a scenic resort and tourist destination. It is in the center of France's hydroelectric power generation area, and the manufacturing industries such as gloves, cement, machinery, electrical products, paper, and metal products are largely dependent on this electricity. It is also a center of nuclear physics research. It is also a transportation hub connecting the mountain region with the Rhône valley through the Isère River valley. The average temperature is 1.5°C in January and 20°C in July. The annual precipitation is 985 mm. There are 77 days of frost. In the second half of the 4th century, it came under the rule of the Roman Emperor Gratianus (reigned 375-383) and was named Gratianopolis, from which the name of the city is derived. In addition to the university founded in 1339, historical buildings include the 12th-13th century Notre Dame Cathedral, the Church of Saint-André, which contains the tomb of the medieval French knight Pierre Terrail Bayard (1473?-1524), and the Renaissance palace, which is now a courthouse. The city hosted the 1968 Winter Olympics. It was the birthplace of the writer Stendhal and the philosopher Condillac.
