An insect of the Geometridae family of the Lepidoptera order. Wingspan is 3-4.5cm. The body is orange-yellow with a row of black markings on the abdomen. The wings are milky white with numerous gray markings. The base of the forewing is orange-yellow with a black-brown band on the outside and a large marking near the rear angle. It is distributed throughout Japan, the Korean peninsula, and northeastern China. In the Kanto to Kinki plains, adults appear twice a year, in spring and summer, flying weakly around food trees during the day and also arriving at lights. The larvae are black loopers with pale yellow bands and lines. They usually appear twice a year, but adults may emerge in autumn and the larvae overwinter at various developmental stages, sometimes pupating within the year.

鱗翅目シャクガ科の昆虫。翅の開張3~4.5cm。体は橙黄色,腹部に黒紋を連ねる。翅は乳白色,灰色の紋が多数ある。前翅基部は橙黄色,その外側に黒褐色帯があり,後角近くに大きな紋がある。日本全土,朝鮮半島,中国東北に分布する。関東から近畿の平野部では,春と夏の2回成虫が出現し,食樹の付近を昼間弱々しく飛ぶし,灯火にも飛来する。幼虫は黒色のシャクトリムシで,淡黄色の帯や線がある。年2回の発生がふつうだが,秋に成虫が羽化することもあって,幼虫はいろいろの発育段階で越冬し,ときには年内に蛹化(ようか)することもある。
