Serval - serval (English spelling)

It is a member of the Felidae family of the Carnivora order of the Mammalia class. It lives in the grasslands of sub-Saharan Africa. Its body length is 70-100 cm, its tail length 35-40 cm, and it weighs 8-9 kg. Its body has long, slender limbs, and it has dark brown spots on an ochre-colored background. It has large triangular ears and a short tail. It lives alone, is mostly nocturnal, and excels at climbing trees and swimming. It is a fast runner and has good jumping power, and can catch low-flying birds with its front paws. Its main food is underground rodents such as mole rats, but it also preys on rabbits, hyraxes, and small antelopes. Each individual has a territory, which has at least one water source. The gestation period is about 74 days, and the female gives birth to 1-3 pups, sometimes 5, in a safe burrow. Their burrows are found in mounds of grass or in holes abandoned by warthogs or porcupines. They have a lifespan of about 20 years in captivity. In Kenya, they are used to control pests by preying on nutria, an introduced species that has taken up residence in dams and causes problems.

哺乳(ほにゅう)綱食肉目ネコ科の動物。サハラ砂漠以南のアフリカの草原に生息する。体長70～100センチメートル、尾長35～40センチメートル、体重8～9キログラム。体は四肢が細長く、黄土色の地に黒褐色の斑点(はんてん)がある。耳は三角形で大きく、尾は短い。単独で生活し、おもに夜行性で、木登りや泳ぎがうまい。走るのが速くジャンプ力もあり、低く飛ぶ鳥を前足でとらえることができる。主食はデバネズミなどの地下生のネズミであるが、ウサギ、ハイラックス、小形のレイヨウなども捕食する。1頭で一つの縄張り（テリトリー）をもつが、そこには1か所以上の水場がある。妊娠期間はおよそ74日で、安全な巣穴で1産1～3子、ときに5子を産む。巣穴は小山のように堆積(たいせき)した草の間や、イボイノシシやヤマアラシが捨てた穴である。寿命は飼育下でほぼ20年。ケニアでは、ダムにすみついて悪影響を及ぼす移入動物のヌートリアを捕食するため、害獣駆除に役だっている。
