Oman Gengobei - Oman Gengobei

The name of a character in a novel or play. It is said to be the name of a person who actually committed a double suicide in Satsuma around 1663 (Kanbun 3), but the details are unknown. It has been sung in folk songs since early times, and has been freely adapted into novels, joruri, and kabuki. The story of Gengobei of the Mountain of Love in Ihara Saikaku's novel "Five Amorous Women" (1686) tells the story of Gengobei, who becomes a monk after losing two beautiful boys he loved, and who becomes a married couple when Oman proposes to him. Chikamatsu Monzaemon's joruri "Satsuma Uta" (1704) is an adaptation of the love story between the Satsuma samurai Hishikawa Gengobei and his daughter Oman, intertwined with the tale of revenge by Sasano Sangobei and his daughter Koman. Later, in plays, the story of the murder of the bathhouse hostess Kikuno at Sonezaki in Osaka by the Satsuma samurai Hayada Hachiemon in 1737 (Genbun 2) was adapted into a drama with Gengobei as the protagonist and Kikuno as his lover, and in particular, when the definitive version of the kabuki play "Godai Riki Koi no Fuujime" (1795) by Namiki Gohei was performed in Edo, the heroine's name was changed to Koman, and since then, the combination of Koman and Gengobei has been used in many plays. In addition, a new kabuki play based on Chikamatsu's "Satsuma Song" from the Meiji period onwards is Oka Kitaro's "Imayo Satsuma Song."

小説、戯曲の登場人物名。1663年（寛文3）ごろ薩摩(さつま)で実在した心中事件の人名というが、詳細は不明。早くから俗謡に歌われ、これをもとに小説や浄瑠璃(じょうるり)、歌舞伎(かぶき)に自由な脚色が行われた。井原西鶴(さいかく)の小説『好色五人女(こうしょくごにんおんな)』（1686）の「恋の山源五兵衛物語」は愛する美少年2人に死別して入道となった源五兵衛が、おまんの求婚で夫婦になるという話。近松門左衛門の浄瑠璃『薩摩歌』（1704）は、薩摩の侍菱川(ひしかわ)源五兵衛と娘おまんの恋に、笹野(ささの)三五兵衛と娘小万の仇(あだ)討ち話を絡ませて脚色。その後、戯曲では1737年（元文2）薩摩の侍早田八右衛門が大坂曽根崎(そねざき)の湯女(ゆな)菊野らを殺害した事件を取り合わせ、主人公を源五兵衛、その愛人を菊野として脚色するようになり、とくにその決定版となった並木五瓶(ごへい)の歌舞伎脚本『五大力恋緘(ごだいりきこいのふうじめ)』（1795）が江戸で上演したときにヒロインの役名を小万として以来、小万源五兵衛のコンビで多くの作品に扱われるようになった。なお、明治以後で近松の『薩摩歌』を下敷きにした新歌舞伎脚本に、岡鬼太郎の『今様(いまよう)薩摩歌』がある。
