Basque - Basque (English spelling)

Basque is a language spoken in the Pyrenees region on the border between France and Spain. It is distributed between the Romance languages of the Indo-European language family, but is thought to be a completely separate language. There have been attempts to link it to Caucasian and Berber languages, and some say it is a remnant of Iberian, but the question of its origin has not yet been resolved. There are about 600,000 speakers, but there are considerable dialect differences. In recent years, a standard language has been established and it is also used in education. There are documents from the 16th century onwards, and literature in Basque flourished from the late 19th century. The phonology is five vowels (including diphthongs), with a somewhat wide variety of fricatives and affricates. Predicate verbs are placed at the end of a sentence, and affixes that correspond to not only the subject but also the object (direct and indirect) are used. Adjectives are placed after the nouns they modify, and nouns can be definite or indefinite, but there is no "gender." The noun that is the subject of the action expressed by a transitive verb takes a different case (the so-called "ergative case") than that used for intransitive verbs.
