King of Egypt (reigned 285-246 BC). Honorary title: Philadelphos ("beloved sister"). Named after his wife and elder sister, Arsinoe II. Son of Ptolemy I. In the war against Syria, he advanced into key areas of Asia Minor and Syria. He improved the kingdom's economic system, expanded libraries and research institutes, invited scholars, and contributed to the development of Hellenistic culture.
