A town in Tamana County in the northwest of Kumamoto Prefecture, in the western Chikuhi Mountains. The main settlement is a former post town on the highway from Chikugo to Higo. The Kyushu Expressway passes through the town. Mandarin oranges, watermelons, vegetables, and other fruits are cultivated in the mountain basin. Area: 68.92 km2 . Population: 10,564 (2010).
