Abbreviation: Lib. One of the twelve zodiacal constellations. It is the area of the sky that continues to the east of Scorpio, and can be likened to the large scissors raised by a scorpion. The reason why Astraea, the goddess of justice, holds the scales is because in ancient Greece, this area was the autumnal equinox, which divided the day and night, but now, due to precession, the autumnal equinox has moved to the neighboring constellation Virgo to the east. It is difficult to imagine the shape of the scales from the arrangement of several third-magnitude stars. Its approximate position is 15h10m in right ascension and -14° in declination. It reaches its culmination at 8pm in early July.

略号Lib。黄道十二星座の一つ。さそり座の東につづく天域で，さそりのふりあげた大きなはさみと見立てることもできる。正義の女神アストライアが手にするてんびんとしたのは，古代ギリシアではこの天域に昼夜を平分する秋分点があったためだが，現在，秋分点は歳差により，東隣のおとめ座に移っている。数個の3等星の配置でてんびんの姿を思い描くのはむずかしい。概略位置は赤経15h10m，赤緯－14゜。午後8時の南中は7月上旬である。
