A city in the southern end of the San Joaquin Valley in southern California, USA. Population 247,057 (2000). It is a distribution center for agricultural products such as cotton, alfalfa, grapes, and other fruits produced in the San Joaquin Valley, and is the center of the oil refining industry. Various industries such as food processing, plastics, and machinery and equipment are also developed. The town was founded by Thomas Baker in 1859, and in 1885, gold mines were discovered nearby and the town grew rapidly, but was later burned down by fire.
