Tenmyougama

Japanese: 天明釜 - てんみょうがま

A general term for tea kettles made in Tenmei, Aso County, Shimotsuke Province (Tochigi Prefecture). Also written as Tenmei Kama or Tenneko Kama. Apparently they have been making cast iron kettles for everyday use since ancient times, and one theory is that it began when a caster migrated from Kawachi Province during the Tenryaku era (947-957). During the Muromachi period, they were praised on a par with the Ashiya kettles in the west. Those made before the Momoyama period are called Ko-Tenmei. The oldest kettles with a date inscription are the Gokurakuji Odare Kama from 1352. Many of them are undecorated and have intricate skin.

下野(しもつけ)国（栃木県）安蘇郡天明で作られた茶釜の総称。天命釜，天猫釜とも記す。古くから日常用の鋳物釜を製作していたらしく，天暦年間（947年−957年）に鋳物師が河内国から移住したのに始まるという説もある。室町時代には西の芦屋釜と並び称された。桃山時代以前のものを古天明という。紀年銘のある釜のうち最古のものは1352年の極楽寺銘尾垂釜。無文様で，肌(はだ)に工夫をこらしたものが多い。
