This refers to tissues in plants, such as the epidermis, parenchyma, and vascular bundles, that are fully mature and perform certain functions. It is also called permanent tissue, and is the opposite of meristematic tissue. The cells that make up the tissue do not usually divide or change any further, hence the name. However, when the abscission layer or cork cambium is formed, cell division occurs in certain places within the parenchyma. Cell division can also begin again when the plant is injured, or when part of the tissue is cultured, resulting in new differentiation.
