[Noun] A small cargo ship that traveled between Kisarazu in Kazusa Province (Chiba Prefecture) and Edo. During the Siege of Osaka in 1614, Kisarazu sailors served under the Tokugawa navy and distinguished themselves, so the ship was granted various privileges by the shogunate, and in addition to transporting rice for the castle as an official ship of the shogunate, it was also engaged in transporting merchant rice, firewood, charcoal, passengers, and other items, becoming the mainstay of water transport within Edo Bay and playing a major role in the distribution and transportation of goods. The ship was a hybrid of a sea vessel and a river vessel, known as a Godairyoku, and was longer and thinner than a regular Bensai-type cargo ship, with a shallower draft. It also had a platform on the side for using the oars, giving it the functionality of a river vessel, and was about 100 to 300 koku in size. *Zappai, Kikutasuri (1766) "A Kisarazu boat with enkiri ga nori" Source: The Selected Edition of the Japanese Language Dictionary About the Selected Edition of the Japanese Language Dictionary Information |
