The Tenna Era - Tenna no Chi

Japanese: 天和の治 - てんなのち

This is the common name for the early period of the Edo Shogunate's 5th Shogun, Tokugawa Tsunayoshi (in office 1680-1709). It is also known as the "Tenna-Teikyo Reforms," taking into account the era name Jokyo (1684-88), which followed Tenna (1681-84). As the Shogunate and feudal domain system began to change in the second half of the 17th century, financial unsoundness and lax governance mechanisms became apparent throughout the feudal class, and resistance from peasants showed signs of increasing in both quality and quantity. In response to this situation, the Shogunate tried to strengthen control over all feudal lords, but the 4th Shogun, Ietsuna, was ill and lacked leadership in government affairs, and the rigid rank system was an obstacle to political reform.

江戸幕府5代将軍徳川綱吉(在職1680‐1709)の初期の施政の通称。天和(1681‐84)に続く年号貞享（じようきよう）(1684‐88)をも冠して〈天和貞享の改革〉とも称する。17世紀後半に入って幕藩制社会が変質しはじめると，領主階級全般に財政の不健全化，支配機構の弛緩が表面化し，農民の抵抗も質量ともに高揚の傾向を示した。幕府もこの事態に対応するため，全領主的支配を強化しようと努力したが，4代将軍家綱が病弱で政務の主導力に欠け，固定化した格式制度が政治刷新の障害をなした。
