Hubei [province] - Hubei
A province in central China, north of Dongting Lake. Its abbreviated name is E. Its capital is Wuhan. The topography is high in the west (over 1000m) and low in the east. The Yangtze River flows east from the steep Three Gorges on the province's western border, and the Han River flows southeast from the northwest border, forming the Jianghan Plain. There are many rivers and lakes, and the province is well-suited for water transportation. The Beijing-Guangzhou Railway (Beijing-Guangzhou) and the Beijing-Kowloon Railway (Beijing-Kowloon) run through the province, and there are also well-developed motorways, making it the center of land and water transportation in central China. It is one of the leading agricultural regions in the country (rice and wheat in the Jianghan Plain, corn in the western mountain area, cotton in the Jianghan Plain, tea in the southern mountain area, etc.), and forest products such as tung oil and lacquer are produced. Famous underground resources include iron (Daye), gypsum in Yingcheng (number one in the country), and rock salt. Modern industry is thriving in Wuhan, with iron and steel manufacturing (Wuhan Iron and Steel Complex), machinery, textiles, tobacco, food, cement, and chemicals. Area: 185,900 km2 . Population: 61.65 million (2014).
