It is abbreviated as IM and is also known as infectious mononucleosis. It presents symptoms similar to glandular fever, but unlike glandular fever caused by rickettsia, the EB virus is thought to be the most important pathogen. It is mostly transmitted by oral infection, with an incubation period of 4-7 weeks, and is common in young men and women, with the three main symptoms being fever, lymphadenopathy (most notable in the neck), and sore throat. It is often accompanied by a generalized skin rash and mild splenomegaly, and while there is usually no change in the red blood cell and platelet series, the white blood cell count generally increases, reaching 20,000/mL or more, and lymphocytes or lymphoid cells account for 50% or more of the white blood cell differential.
