Gutzkow, K.

...German journalist and playwright. Born in Berlin. The impact of the French Revolution was so great that university student Gutzkow felt that "for me, academics had ended, and history had begun." As a "born journalist," he became a representative of the Young Germans alongside Wienbalch, and continued to write critiques in the Phoenix and other publications without rest. It is well known that, as an editor, he discovered the talent of playwright G. Büchner. Around this time, he challenged religious taboos with his novel of the same name, Walie the Doubter (1835) (for which he was later imprisoned for four months), and on the other hand, together with Wienbalch, he planned the notable literary magazine Deutsche Review, but their movement was destroyed by the total ban on the Young Germans by the German Bundestag (December 1835). ...
