Jalāl Āl‐e Aḥmad

A contemporary Iranian writer. Born into a Shiite ulama family in Tehran, he worked hard to graduate from the higher normal school and then became a teacher. After World War II he joined the Tudeh Party (1947), and made his debut in the literary world with his debut work, A New Year's Visit (1945). During the Mossadegh era he joined the "Third Force," a wing of the National Front, but left in 1953. In 1958 he published his representative work, The Headmaster, and showed an interest in education and cultural issues. From the 1960s he took a stance on the Third World and a renewed appreciation of ethnic culture, and continued to criticize the monarchy. His books include The Curse of the Earth (1967).

現代イランの作家。テヘランのシーア派ウラマーの家庭に生まれ，苦学して高等師範修了後，教職につく。第2次世界大戦後トゥーデ党に入党(1947)。処女作《年始訪問》(1945)で文壇に登場した。モサッデク時代には国民戦線の一翼である〈第三勢力〉に参加，1953年離脱した。58年代表作《校長》を上梓，教育･文化問題に関心を示し，60年代から第三世界論，民族文化再認識の論調を打ち出し，王政批判を続けた。著書は《地の呪い》(1967。
