A city in the western part of Miyazaki Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1950. It is centered on the Kobayashi Basin, where the Iwase River, a tributary of the Oyo River, flows, and the southern part is the northern foothills of Mount Kirishima. It has been a strategic location between Hyuga and Higo since ancient times. The Kito Line, Miyazaki Expressway, and national highways 221, 265, and 268 are all concentrated in the city, and it is the base for tourism in Kirishima-Kinkowan National Park. It is an agricultural city mainly producing livestock, vegetables, and fruit, and there are many tourist farms producing grapes and pears. There are also various factories in the textile, electronics, lumber, and dairy industries. With abundant spring water, carp and rainbow trout are cultivated, and shochu is brewed. A cosmos farm opened in 1995. There is the Ikoma Plateau, where cosmos bloom. In March 2006, Suki Village, Nishimorokata District, was incorporated, and in March 2010, Nojiri Town, Nishimorokata District, was incorporated. The area is 562.95 km 2 . 48,270 people (2010).

宮崎県西部の市。1950年市制。大淀川の支流岩瀬川が流れる小林盆地が中心で,南部は霧島山北麓。古来日向(ひゅうが)と肥後の間の要害の地であった。吉都線,宮崎自動車道,国道221,265,268号線が集中,霧島錦江湾国立公園観光の基地である。畜産,蔬菜,果樹を主とする農業都市でブドウ,ナシなどの観光農園も多い。繊維,電子,製材,乳業などの諸工場も立地。湧水が豊富でコイ,ニジマスの養殖,焼酎醸造も行う。1995年コスモス牧場がオープンした。コスモスが咲く生駒高原がある。2006年3月西諸県郡須木村を,2010年3月西諸県郡野尻町を編入。562.95km2。4万8270人(2010)。
