…Formally called Coast Defense Officer, this was the title of a position in the Edo Shogunate established in 1845 (Koka 2) to respond to the external crisis caused by the frequent arrival of foreign ships and to defend the coast. Appointed from among the Roju, Wakadoshiyori, Ometsuke, Metsuke, and Kanjo Bugyo, their main function was to respond to inquiries about coastal defense measures from the Roju, but as foreign issues became more important in Shogunate politics, their role also grew, and they promoted the opening-up policy, mainly through the Ometsuke and Kometsuke, assisted Abe Masahiro and Hotta Masachika. …
