Kabuki theater. One of the three Edo theaters. It began as the Murayama Theater, built in Sakaicho (later Fukiyacho) by Murayama Matasaburo in 1634 (Kan'ei 11). Later, Ichimura Uzaemon, the first to hold the name, took over the performance rights, and around the Kanbun era (1661-1673), he had his adopted son Ichimura Takenojo, the first to hold the Ichimura Theater, build a tower, and successive Uzaemons served as the theater's owner. The waiting tower was the Kiri Theater. In 1842 (Tenpo 13), it moved to Saruwakacho, Asakusa. In the Meiji era, Uzaemon 14 retired and Murayama Matasaburo II became the owner of the theater, changing its name to Murayama-za. It was later renamed Miyamoto-za and Satsuma-za, and in 1878 (Meiji 11), it was renamed Ichimura-za, but it no longer had any connection to the Ichimura family. In 1892, it moved to Nichomachi, Shitaya, and from 1908 (Meiji 41), Tamura Nariyoshi took over management, ushering in a golden age known as the Ichimura-za era, with young kabuki actors centered around Onoe Kikugoro 6 and Nakamura Kichiemon I. However, it declined in the late Taisho era, and was burned down in May 1932 (Showa 7), and the name of the theater was lost.
