Kabuki actor and head of the Ichimura-za. The first head (1654?-1718 | Shoo 3?-Kyoho 3) was the adopted son of the third Ichimura Uzaemon. He was active during the Kanbun and Enpo eras (1661-81), and according to the Ichimura-za History Book (written in the 10th year of the Kyoho era), he performed three consecutive kyogen plays together with Tamagawa Shuzen in 1664 (Kanbun 4). It is believed that he went to Osaka around 1665 or 1666, then returned to Edo and became head of the Ichimura-za around 1667. As an actor, he excelled in dialogue and was good at rhythmic plays, but was not good at nude plays. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
